Philosophie der Zeit

The visual imagination plays an especially prominent role in spacetime physics. Spacetime diagrams and other visualizations guide the imagination in computation. The speaker discusses the images of time coming out of physics and the philosophical confusions to which they give rise.

In Einstein's theory of General Relativity, ambiguities arise as to the physicality of time. The talk introduces gauge invariance and describes the general form of a gauge invariant observable according to Rovelli's formulation of classical mechanics.
